Alabama Traffic Laws

A brief guide to Alabama traffic laws

As a driver, you have the responsibility to operate your vehicle safely. Doing so means following every Alabama traffic law. Failure to do so may subject you to Alabama traffic fines or the loss or suspension of your license.

Many different violations of Alabama traffic law can lead a police officer to pull you over:

• Different speeding violations can result in a different Alabama traffic fine. If you are speeding in a given area but still going 85 miles per hour or less, you will pay $164 if you are cited for this violation. Alabama traffic fines can increase by up to $180 if you are going faster than 185 miles per hour.

• More than one Alabama traffic law governs proper procedure for passing another vehicle. Improperly changing lanes or failing to signal a term can lead to Alabama traffic fines of $164 for each incident.

• Not all rules regard active violations of Alabama traffic law. Failure to maintain your vehicle properly, such as driving with faulty brakes, can also lead to an Alabama traffic fine.

• All drivers are required to have insurance in case of an accident. Alabama traffic laws stipulate a $244 penalty if you are pulled over and found to be driving without proper insurance.

Many such violations of Alabama traffic law do not require a court appearance. However, if you do not wish to pay Alabama traffic fines for a violation, you may request a trial. If you do not take any action to request a courtroom hearing regarding your Alabama traffic law violation, you are obligated to pay the penalty. Different areas may assess a different Alabama traffic fine.

Alabama traffic laws create a "point" system for each violation. If you are cited for driving violations that add up to 12 or more points within a two year period, your license will be suspended in addition to any Alabama traffic fine you pay. Alabama traffic laws state that you may lose your driving privileges for any period from 60 days to an entire year.

People who accumulate too many driving points are not the only ones at risk for having their license suspended. Alabama traffic laws cover many other circumstances under which you may temporarily lose your driving privileges. For example, if there is a repeated pattern of reckless driving or you failed to pay an Alabama traffic fine, your license may be suspended for a period of time. Alabama traffic laws allow you to request a hearing if your license is suspended.

Certain driving violations place you at risk for more than paying an Alabama traffic fine or having a license suspended. While speeding tickets are infractions, misdemeanors and felonies can lead to more serious consequences. In addition to paying Alabama traffic fines, you may face jail time for legal violations such as driving while intoxicated or being involved in a manslaughter thanks to reckless driving. If you have been convicted once of driving under the influence, you should not repeat the incident. People who are pulled over a second time for this legal violation will not only have to pay Alabama traffic fines but will have their license revoked.
